We are looking for an inspirational, enthusiastic and motivated Drama Assistant to join our thriving Drama Department for the 2016 – 2017 academic year (September 2016 to July 2017). The successful candidate will have significant experience in the theatrical arts, either part way through a University Drama Degree (or equivalent i.e. English / Theatre Design) or indeed a Graduate. They will be a good all-round professional, who enjoys working with young performers of all abilities. They may have a particular interest in the administration that supports a flourishing department as well as the practical application of drama in the classroom and rehearsals.

Drama plays a very significant role in the life of the school and the Senior Drama Department has an excellent reputation in the local area, competing in the annual Mid-Somerset Festival as well as sending pupils to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2014. The post is extremely varied and would suit a university student on a placement year or indeed a graduate interested in gaining experience in education and administration. The position is salaried (£8,000) and includes accommodation for the whole year (including holidays) and full board during term time.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience

A Drama Degree, or related degree such as English or Theatre Design (or on a Placement Year as part of a degree course)
Experience of organising celebration evenings, productions, trips, festivals, showcases, etc will be an advantage

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to inspire and motivate students through complete involvement in the life of the Drama Department
Ability to relate and empathise effectively to earn the confidence of colleagues, pupils and parents
Significant experience of performing, directing or supporting a production either as part of co-curricular involvement or through school/university study
Excellent organisational and time management skills
A strong grasp of ICT knowledge and skills including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Excel

Job Description
Drama and Boarding Assistant
The Drama & Boarding Assistant is answerable to the Head of Drama & the Head of Boarding. This responsibility may be devolved to the relevant Housemaster/mistress as appropriate. More specifically, but not exclusively, the role will include the following duties and responsibilities:

Drama Assistant:
To be mindful of all aspects of child protection in relation to the pupils
To assist the department with photocopying and general administration duties as asked
To complete all trip organisation for the department
To maintain the organisation of both Drama offices by cataloguing all materials and overseeing the signing in and out system
To be involved with the tidying of the costume cupboard and the signing in/out of costumes
To be involved in creating and maintaining the departments displays
To be involved in the Open Morning organisation and delivery
To attend the weekly department meeting, take the minutes and distribute them
To complete purchase orders and liaise with the accounts department
To maintain a current spreadsheet for the department budget as asked
To be involved in the organisation of the Mid-Somerset Festival
To be involved in organising all the LAMDA arrangements for the pupils’ including timetables, recharging pupils, exam entries, both in the Senior and Prep School
To assist in LAMDA lessons as required
To support the department during Activity time, including facilitating a club for the Lower School
To be involved in all aspects of any School production, from Senior School musical to Lower School production, as asked
To help organise the Arts Awards evening
To assist in the Inter-House Drama Competition
To support developing links with the Prep School

Boarding Assistant:
To be mindful of all aspects of child protection in relation to the pupils
To remain professional in dealing with pupils at all times
To work closely with the Housemaster/mistress to ensure the welfare and safety of the pupils is paramount
To keep accurate records of conversations with pupils/parents as appropriate and to make sure that they are passed to the relevant staff as appropriate
To work collaboratively with other more senior members of the boarding house team
To be involved in the handover with the academic member of staff to ensure a smooth flow of relevant information
To work closely with the House Matron as required
To attend the House meeting at the beginning of term, and as asked throughout the term, to facilitate the clear dissemination of pupil information
To assist in the collation of travel details as required
To assist with the smooth running of the boarding house as asked
To lead roll calls as appropriate
To help supervise and support boarders during their Prep time and during their co-curricular activities
