Why are there so many “Recruitment Consultant” job ads?


This is a genuine question – can anyone on Facebook or Twitter explain?

Sometimes it seems like there is nothing but Recruitment Consultant (/Sales Executives/HeadHunter) jobs on Graduate job boards, often advertised as “£22,000 with uncapped commission (40k 1st year OTE, 70k 2nd year OTE)” or similar. What’s OTE? Can you actually earn 70k in 2 years? Is there is a high turnover of staff if people don’t hit their recruitment/sales targets? What do you actually do in this role? Is it cold-calling?
